Welcome to my Big-Dog Blog Spot. I thought of that name all by
myself. I'm the 3rd generation to work at Smith Home
Improvements - my Grandpa (Aaron), my Dad (Allen), and my Uncle
(Darren) do a lot of the work around here - along with Jerry, Luke,
Junior, & Will. Grandma brings the mail every day. But
I've seen all of the business from the ground up - so I have a
unique perspective that I want to share with you from time to time.
Being in the Home Improvements business, I see a lot of paperwork.
Around here everyone keeps track of all the details - Dad says it's
all part of our commitment to customer satisfaction. I suggested
we forget all about the paperwork, and just let the customers pat the
dog instead.... what can be more satisfying than that?
I tend to use paper for other things. I'm
not really a desk sort of dog - I prefer more action. But I have fun
re-arranging all the papers on everyone's desk when they're not looking -
that's fun! |

Those folks at
Burrton Mennonite Church
are great people - they let us spend all day in their yard digging big
holes! It was great fun, and I never got scolded once for it!
We're finishing a new addition to the Church, and today was time to
put in some sewer lines.
I'm a little embarrassed to say,
but Dad thinks it's fun to use our Bobcat to dig holes. A -CAT - of
all things. Everyone knows a dog can dig a hole much better than a
Cat. Uncle Darren has 5 cats and when I go to his house I have fun
chasing them. I tried to chase the Bobcat and it started blowing
smoke. So I just went about my business and dug some nice big holes of
my own. Unlike me, the Cat needs Dad to tell it what to do - and he
does a great job making it do just the right things. All of our
customers appreciate what a good job he does. They tell me I'm a good
boy, too. Tomorrow we get to go back and play in the dirt some more -
filling in all the holes we dug today! What fun! |

Things kind of slow down for winter around here. It gets pretty
cold outside. So we all spend most of our time looking for
inside projects. The guys are working at remodeling a couple of
basements, I hear. I don't get to go into customer's homes.
So I'm looking forward to springtime and warmer weather, when the
bunnies and the squirrels all come out. They're fun to chase.
So this month I don't have much to report. There are some big
projects in the works, though, so I'll have plenty to explore soon!
(Aren't I just one handsome dog?) :) |

We've been working on the plans and drawings for this multi-purpose
concessions,
scoring, & restroom facility. Allen designed this for the
Milburn Stone Recreational Park in Burrton. I went out and
scoped out the area several times. I hope the Recreation
Commission approves it - I'm looking forward to being the official hot
dog taste tester for the Home Plate concessions area! |

Uncle Darren was out of the office for a week, so I got to come in and
help. The accounting part I left for him, but I enjoyed watching
over things in the office. I kept the desk cleared, reminded the
guys when it was lunch time, and made sure everything was running
smoothly - especially the rabbits in the back. People work sure
seems a lot easier than dog work, the way I see it.... |

I'm worn
out this week. We put on a new roof on a house in the middle of
summer and it was HOT. From up there we could watch a
fly-by-night group roofing someone else's house. Even I could tell the
difference between Quality work that is complete and meant to last,
from those guys who were rushing through, cutting corners, and leaving
town. Seems to me that it's smarter to do things the Right Way,
rather than do it the sloppy way. It's sad when good people pay
good money for bad work, when for only a little more it could be done
right to last. That's why I'm hiring Smith Home Improvements to
design & build my new 2-story dog house. I think I deserve air
conditioning and a whirlpool tub too, don't you think? And shag
carpet instead of straw? |
